As the holiday season quickly approaches it is important to slow down and reflect upon those things that are truly meaningful in our lives and the lives of others. Every day as we go through our daily activities we interact with people who are facing struggles that we may be totally unaware of. We forget that even though we are “ok” the person standing next to us in line at the grocery store may not be. While we have a full basket brimming with all of the special items that make up our personal holidays, that father who’s recently lost his job may be frantically running numbers in his head, hoping that he has enough money to provide his family with the basic necessities, and that grandmother who’s raising her grandchildren may be praying everyday that somehow she will find the money somewhere to buy her grandchildren the new coats that they require this winter, to say nothing of the toys that she knows they secretly long for at Christmastime. We may be fortunate enough that we have had no firsthand experience with hunger in our own lives and we may be lucky enough to own multiple warm articles of clothing, and our Christmas wish lists may be long and extensive but we should each try and remember that there are thousands of children and families in our own community that struggle everyday to survive. That there are children and families that will go through the winter hungry and cold without our help and that we each can make a small difference in another person’s life. This year Kids Kare, as a member of our larger community family, has focused on collecting canned foods for The Povarello House, warm coats for Coats for Kids, and new unwrapped toys to support Toys for Tots.
